INDIANAPOLIS — Freshman Michael Callan Moss (Brooklyn, N.Y.) went 3-for-5 with a grand slam and six RBI and senior Nick Payero (Monroe, N.J.) struck out nine batters in a six inning start as the Seton Hall baseball team defeated Butler, 12-6, on Friday afternoon. The win followed a continuation of the series opener that started yesterday but was stopped due to lightning. Butler came out on top in game one, 8-7, in 10 innings. Redshirt sophomore Will Gale (Scotch Plains, N.J.) went 2-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored. How It Happened Seton Hall jumped on Butler early in the second game. With runners on the corners, Junior Devin Hack (Somerville, N.J.) stole second base and Gale broke for home on the throw and he was able to score. Later in the frame, the bases were loaded for Moss who took a hack and lifted an 0-1 pitch that went over the center field wall for a grand slam, making it 5-0 Seton Hall. Payero retired the side in order in the home half of the first and blanked the Bulldogs in the second and third innings. The Hall gave its hurler some more breathing room with a seven-spot in the fourth. Freshman Jedier Hernandez (Trenton, N.J.) opened the scoring with an RBI double and junior Mark McNelly (Limerick, Pa.) sent a run home on sac fly. The Pirates then drove in three more runs on base hits and a wild pitch allowed freshman Pat D'Amico (Lynnfield, Mass.) to score that made it 12-0 in favor of The Hall. Those two crooked numbers was all the scoring that the Pirates needed. Despite Butler cutting its deficit in half, the Seton Hall bullpen held on to the lead and helped seal the victory. With one out in the top of the first inning in game one, Hack belted his fourth triple of the season to right center field and later score on an RBI groundout that gave the Pirates a 1-0 lead. The Bulldogs responded in the home half of the first with four runs to jump in front, 4-1, but sophomore Drew Conover (Pittstown, N.J.) stopped the bleeding with two shutdown innings of relief. In the top of the third, Seton Hall cut its deficit to one thanks to consecutive RBI doubles by junior Jonathan Luders (Lynnfield, Mass.) and junior Staus Pokrovsky (Pittsgrove, N.J.). It started with one out where McNelly reached on a single and moved to second on a groundout. Luders then cashed in with two outs and Pokrovsky followed up behind him with a two-bagger of his own, making it 4-3 Butler. The Pirates did even more damage in the top of the fourth. With senior Justin Scotto (Tinton Falls, N.J.) on second base following a lead off walk and a sacrifice bunt, Hernandez singled to center field and it moved Scotto to third. Graduate student Collin Sheehan (Doylestown, Pa.) then dropped a bunt that was fielded and thrown wide of first base by the pitcher, allowing Scotto to score with ease and tie the game at 4-4. With two outs in the inning, Hack stepped to the plate and turned on the first of the at-bat down the right field line that cleared the bases and gave Seton Hall a 6-4 lead. Hack moved to third and later scored on two wild pitches that extended the Pirates' lead to 7-4. An RBI double in the fourth and a two-run home run in the seventh helped the Bulldogs tie the game up at 7-7. That's when poor weather and lightning approached, postponing the game to Friday at noon. The game was restarted in top of the eighth and the Pirates were able to put two runners and were unable to score. The stranded Pirates came back to bite them as Butler pushed a run across in the bottom of the 10th to win it, 8-7. Up Next The Pirates will conclude their series with the Bulldogs tomorrow morning at 10:30 a.m.
