Gambling kiosks: Ohio is accepting applications from bars and restaurants that want a sports gambling kiosk, and over 1,000 of them have already started the process. Sean McDonnell reports the state’s law that legalized sports gambling created several ways to place bets, including mobile apps, physical sportsbooks and the kiosks that will be available in bars, restaurants and bowling alleys Jan. 1.

Jail renovations: Plans for a second review of potential renovations in the Cuyahoga County Jail narrowly passed on Monday after two County Council members voted against the spending. Councilman Dale Miller and chief of staff Joseph Nanni, who was filling in for Councilwoman Nan Baker on the Board of Control, said they do not support a $150,000 contract for DLZ Architecture. Miller believes a jail renovation “is not workable,” reports Kaitlin Durbin.

Tyler’s Law: The 65 amusement rides at this year’s Ohio State Fair are being inspected under new protocols established with Tyler’s Law, named after a Columbus man who was killed five years ago after being thrown from a ride. Laura Hancock reports that Ohio officials showcased the new protocols, which require more documentation by ride owners and state inspectors, who will look for signs of cracking, “pitting” -- in which small holes show an area of metal that’s begun to corrode -- or more serious corrosion.

District 13: Ohio State Board of Education member Kirsten Hill is challenging state Sen. Nathan Manning for his seat in a contest where voters must choose between a pragmatic, moderate incumbent and a conservative. Laura Hancock reports Manning and Hill want to represent the newly drawn Ohio Senate District 13, which includes Lorain and parts of Erie and Huron counties.

Toxic chemicals: Lorain County hosts 35 facilities that reported toxic releases in 2020 to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Combined, these facilities released 1,281,861 pounds of 127 separate toxic chemicals into the environment, reports Zachary Smith.

Hospital rankings: For the 28th year in a row, the Cleveland Clinic ranked first in the nation for cardiology and heart surgery in the U.S. News & World Report 2022-23 Best Hospitals rankings, released today. The Clinic, however, dropped to fourth on U.S. News’ Honor Roll for best hospitals overall, down from No. 2 the previous two years, Julie Washington reports. University Hospitals was ranked third best in Ohio.

Aduhelm: Alzheimer’s patients across the country may be forced to stop taking the Alzheimer’s drug Aduhelm due to a federal rules change, reports Julie Washington. Under new Medicare rules, dementia patients can’t get Aduhelm unless they have a mild form of the disease and are participants in a drug trial.

Electric truck: The Ford F-150 Lightning is here. And while the all-electric truck has a long wait line for buyers, dealerships across Greater Cleveland now have Lightning trucks ready to test drive, reports Sean McDonnell. Don’t expect to order one and get it soon; Ford stopped reservations for the 2022 model after they topped 200,000.

Cold storage: Another cold-storage food warehouse is potentially coming to Northeast Ohio, this time slated for Lorain County. Berkshire Refrigerated Warehousing plans to build a 200,000-square-foot refrigerated warehouse in Sheffield, reports Sean McDonnell.

Shane Bartek: Witnesses are expected to take the stand today in the trial of the woman accused of killing an off-duty Cleveland police officer during a botched carjacking. Cory Shaffer reports prosecutors and defense attorneys spent much of Monday selecting the jury that will decide the case of 18-year-old Tamara McLoyd. She is accused of aggravated murder, murder, aggravated robbery and several other charges tied to the Dec. 31 slaying of Shane Bartek.

Supremacist trial: A Mogadore man who authorities said idolized the Unabomber threatened to kill the mother of his children after he learned the woman gave information to federal probation officials after he pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI, reports Adam Ferrise. Details of Andrew Dodson’s life, including that authorities believe he used white supremacist codes in his email address, are expected to come into focus in a trial that began Monday in federal court in Cleveland.

Police shooting: A Wellington police officer shot a man who wielded a knife during a confrontation with officers, according to a body camera video released Monday. The officer who fired the shot Saturday evening then provided first aid to Scott Bakker, 37, of Courtland Street. On Monday, Bakker was in stable condition at MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland with a gunshot to the abdomen.

‘White Noise’: “White Noise” – shot in Cleveland last year -- will open the 79th Venice Film Festival on Aug. 31, reports Joey Morona. Directed by Noah Baumbach and starring Adam Driver and Greta Gerwig, scenes were filmed in Cleveland Heights, Wellington, and Canton, and on the campuses of Oberlin and Baldwin Wallace, among other places.

Springsteen concert: When tickets for the first batch of shows for Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band’s 2023 tour went on sale, Ticketmaster was reportedly selling its “platinum” tickets for face-value amounts that ballooned to $5,000 before fees thanks to a dynamic pricing model, reports Troy Smith. Fortunately, those hoping to attend Springsteen’s show at Cleveland’s Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse on April 5 won’t have that problem.
